A Complete Guide to a Chimney Inspection

Why Inspections Matter

A chimney inspection is the foundation of fireplace safety. It identifies damage, deterioration, and hazards that are invisible during normal use. The NFPA requires an inspection whenever a chimney is cleaned and at least once per year.

Level I Inspection

A Level I inspection is a visual examination of the readily accessible portions of the chimney. The technician checks the firebox, damper, flue liner (visible portions), chimney exterior, crown, cap, and flashing. This level is appropriate for annual checkups when no changes have been made to the system.

Level II Inspection

A Level II inspection includes everything in Level I plus a video scan of the flue interior and accessible attic and crawl space areas around the chimney. This level is required for real estate transactions, after a chimney fire, when changing fuel types, or when damage is suspected.

Level III Inspection

A Level III inspection involves partial demolition of chimney or building components to access concealed areas. This level is performed only when a Level II inspection reveals serious hazards that cannot be fully evaluated without removing materials.
