What Is a Chimney Cap?
A chimney cap is a metal cover installed on top of the flue tile or chimney opening. It includes a solid top plate to shed rain and mesh screening to block animals and sparks.
Benefits of a Chimney Cap
- Water protection: Keeps rain, snow, and ice out of the flue
- Animal exclusion: Mesh screen blocks birds, raccoons, and squirrels
- Spark arrest: Prevents hot embers from landing on the roof
- Downdraft reduction: Some cap designs reduce wind-driven downdrafts
Types of Chimney Caps
Single-flue caps fit over one flue tile and are secured with set screws. Multi-flue caps cover the entire chimney top and protect multiple flues. Top-mount damper caps combine a cap with a sealing damper for energy savings. Wind-directional caps rotate to face away from the wind, reducing downdrafts.
Materials
- Stainless steel: 15-20 year lifespan, rust-resistant
- Galvanized steel: 5-10 year lifespan, most affordable
- Copper: Lifetime durability, develops an attractive patina
