What Is Tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing is a masonry repair technique that involves grinding out old, crumbling mortar from the joints between chimney bricks and filling those joints with new mortar. The goal is to restore the waterproof seal that keeps moisture from penetrating the chimney structure.
Why Mortar Deteriorates
Mortar is intentionally softer than brick so it absorbs stress from thermal expansion, settling, and seismic movement. Over time, rain, wind, UV exposure, and temperature swings erode the mortar faster than the surrounding bricks. In Southern California, dry heat followed by winter rain accelerates the cycle.
Warning Signs You Need Tuckpointing
- Mortar joints that are recessed, cracked, or crumbling
- White powder (efflorescence) on the chimney exterior
- Loose or fallen bricks
- Water stains inside the firebox or on walls near the chimney
- Visible gaps between bricks
How Eco Grizzly Handles Tuckpointing
Our masons grind out damaged mortar to a depth of at least 3/4 inch using angle grinders with diamond blades. We clean the joints with compressed air, then apply new mortar in thin layers to prevent shrinkage cracking. Each joint is tooled to match the original profile and mortar color.
How Often Should Tuckpointing Be Done?
Most chimneys in the Pasadena area need tuckpointing every 20 to 30 years, depending on exposure and original mortar quality. An annual chimney inspection catches mortar problems early, before they lead to water damage or structural failure.
