Preparing Your Fireplace for Spring

End-of-Season Cleanup

Remove all ash from the firebox once you are done burning for the season. Leftover ash absorbs moisture and creates a corrosive paste that damages firebrick and metal components. Dispose of ash in a metal container stored away from the house.

Schedule a Sweep and Inspection

Having your chimney swept in spring means you start the next burning season with a clean, inspected system. It also takes advantage of lower demand and faster scheduling.

Close the Damper (or Cap)

Closing the damper prevents conditioned air from escaping up the flue during summer. If you have a top-mount damper, make sure the cable is secured in the closed position.

Decorative Off-Season Use

Consider placing a decorative screen, candle arrangement, or potted plant in the firebox during months when the fireplace is not in use. This keeps the opening looking intentional rather than empty.

Glass Door Cleaning

Clean glass doors with a non-abrasive fireplace glass cleaner. Baked-on residue softens with a damp cloth dipped in fine ash. Rinse and dry for a streak-free finish.
