Fireplace damper mechanism for flue control

Fireplace Damper Repair and Replacement

A broken or missing damper wastes energy and lets cold air, rain, and animals into your home.

The damper controls airflow between your living space and the chimney. A broken damper that is stuck open creates a constant draft and drives up heating and cooling bills. A damper stuck closed prevents safe fireplace use. Eco Grizzly repairs throat-mount dampers and installs energy-saving top-mount dampers that seal the flue from the chimney top.

Top-Mount vs. Throat-Mount Dampers

Throat-mount dampers sit inside the firebox at the base of the smoke chamber. They are prone to warping and corrosion. Top-mount dampers seal the flue at the chimney top with a spring-loaded stainless steel lid operated by a cable inside the firebox. They provide a tighter seal, double as a rain cap, and are easier to operate.

Energy Savings from a Proper Damper

An open or broken damper is like leaving a window open year round. Conditioned air escapes up the chimney in summer and winter, increasing HVAC workload and energy bills by up to 30 percent. A top-mount damper with a silicone rubber gasket creates a near-airtight seal that stops this energy loss. Homeowners who upgrade from a broken throat damper to a top-mount system typically notice an immediate reduction in drafts and lower utility bills within the first month.

Our Repair and Installation Process

For throat-mount repairs, we clean the damper frame, replace warped plates, lubricate pivot pins, and adjust the handle mechanism. If the throat damper is beyond repair, we install a top-mount damper by attaching a stainless cable from the chimney top through the flue to a mounting bracket inside the firebox. The top unit seats against a rubber gasket for an airtight seal when closed and opens fully for fireplace use. Installation takes about two hours.

Chimney Cap & Top-Sealing Damper Installation

Southern California

The existing cap was rusted through and no longer keeping water out of the flue. We removed the failed cap, cleaned up the crown edges, and installed a heavy-gauge stainless steel chimney cap paired with a top-sealing damper. The top-seal closes the flue completely when the fireplace is not in use — eliminating cold downdrafts, preventing animal entry, and cutting heating and cooling energy loss. A second angle shot confirms the tight, level fit.

Chimney Cap & Top-Sealing Damper Replacement

Southern California

This chimney had been operating without a functional cap, leaving the flue open to rain, debris, and animals. Our technicians measured the flue tile, fitted a new multi-flue stainless cap, and paired it with a top-sealing damper. The assembly locks down tight between uses, dramatically reducing heat loss and preventing moisture damage inside the flue liner.

Damper Clamp Installation

Southern California

The existing throat damper plate had corroded and no longer closed fully, allowing constant cold downdrafts and energy loss. Rather than an expensive full damper replacement at this time, we installed a heavy-duty damper clamp that holds the damper plate securely shut. The clamp features a chain release so the homeowner can open it easily before lighting a fire. A cost-effective solution that immediately solved the draft and energy issue.

Damper Repair FAQs

Common questions answered by our certified technicians.

An open damper can increase heating costs by up to 30 percent. It functions like an open window, allowing conditioned air to escape 24 hours a day.
The main variables are flue size and whether the existing damper has to come out first. A top-sealing damper also pays for itself over time by stopping the constant air loss an old throat damper allows. We measure the flue and quote the damper and installation together.
Yes. You pull the cable handle to open the damper fully before lighting a fire and close it after the fire is completely out. The cable handle mounts inside the firebox within easy reach.
