Stone chimneys fail differently from brick ones. The stone itself usually outlasts the house; what goes is the mortar between the units, and on a stone chimney those joints are irregular in width and depth, so a repair that works on a brick course does not transfer. Eco Grizzly repairs fieldstone, river rock, and cut stone chimneys on homes across Los Angeles, Pasadena, and the Valley, including the Craftsman and Spanish Revival houses where the chimney is part of the architecture rather than a utility running up an outside wall.

Stone Repair

Repointing Irregular Stone Joints

Brick joints run a consistent three-eighths of an inch and can be ground out with a wheel. Stone joints vary from a hairline to two inches within the same chimney, which means the deteriorated mortar comes out by hand and the replacement is packed in layers rather than struck in one pass. We match the mortar to the original mix, which on pre-war Southern California stonework is usually softer and higher in lime than a modern bag mix. A hard modern mortar against soft stone transfers the movement into the stone and the stone is what cracks.

Resetting Displaced and Loose Stone

Seismic movement and settling push individual stones out of plane, most often on the corners and at the transition above the roofline. Each displaced unit is removed, the bed cleaned back to sound mortar, and the stone reset in its original orientation. Stone is not interchangeable the way a brick is: the face that has weathered for eighty years is the face that has to go back out, or the repair reads as a patch from the street.

Rebuilding Above the Roofline

The section above the roof takes the weather from every side and is where most stone chimneys fail first. Where the mortar has washed out through more than a third of the exposed height, rebuilding that section is more durable than repointing it. We photograph and number the stones before dismantling so the rebuilt section returns in its original pattern.

Stone Cleaning and Sealing

Soot, efflorescence, and smoke staining come off with the gentlest method that works, starting with water and a brush and escalating only as far as the stone requires. Pressure washing a soft sandstone or an aged river rock drives water into the joints and erodes the face. After cleaning we apply a vapour-permeable sealant where the stone type calls for one, which blocks liquid water while letting trapped moisture leave as vapour.

Stone Repair FAQs

Common questions answered by our certified technicians.

Yes, in the joints rather than in the stone. Brick courses are uniform, so mortar can be ground out mechanically to an even depth. Stone joints vary within a single chimney, so the old mortar comes out by hand and the new goes in by layers. The mortar mix matters more too: a hard modern mortar against soft historic stone moves the stress into the stone face.
Often, depending on where the lean starts. A lean confined to the section above the roofline is usually a rebuild of that section. A lean that begins at or below the roofline points at the footing or the structure behind it, and that is assessed before any masonry work is quoted.
That is the object. Mortar is matched for colour and for mix, joints are tooled to the existing profile, and displaced stones are reset on their original weathered face. Where a stone has to be replaced we source from salvage before cutting new, because a freshly cut face will not match eighty years of weathering.
Repointing a single elevation is usually one to two days. A rebuild above the roofline runs three to five days depending on height and access. We give the timeline with the estimate, after the inspection rather than over the phone.
